Site Survey
Determine indoor, or outdoor areas to be observed and recorded. (note: try to limit each camera run to 150ft, or less)
Determine if power for each camera location is already available. Remember, you can easily choose wire and accessories that deliver both power and video to the camera, and avoid the problem of installing a power outlet at the camera-end (see Section 6 below).

Select Cameras
Choose a camera suitable for indoor, or outdoor conditions, as well as day or night time viewing. Also consider the camera resolution and lens required to view objects at desired distances.

Select DVR
Choose a DVR capable of connecting the total number of cameras in the system (DVRs usually allow the connection of 4, 8, or 16 cameras). Choose a DVR capable of recording a desirable length of time (usually one week or more). Keep in mind that recording capacity is primarily dependant upon hard drive size, video compression (H.264, MPEG-4, MJPEG, etc.), and frame rate (30fps is the highest maximum frame rate per channel/camera for recording).
